Australian families are heading to Bali in droves - and not just for the beaches, writes John Borthwick.

Australia, What Are You Waiting For? boomed a recent editorial headline in The Bali Times asking when, if ever, the Australian Government would lift its travel caution on Indonesia, as the US recently has. However, Australians aren’t waiting for anything.

We’re back to Bali in droves - 127,300 of us in the first half of this year alone, an increase of 48 per cent over the previous year, making the island our third most popular overseas destination after New Zealand and Thailand.

Australian families have long been drawn to Bali but these days we go for more than the beaches. Family-friendly hotels, adventure excursions, increasingly sophisticated shopping and, as ever, the hospitable Balinese people are the drawcards.

Check the awards and then check who gives them

August 13, 2008

Staying or flying with award winning hotel or Airline? Before you check your family in on the next holiday you may want to check who gives the awards out!

And what about the airline – has it won many awards? Come to think of it, doesn’t the travel agent seem a tad lean in the awards department?

When we’re planning a holiday, is it really all that important to confirm that other people or organisations think our choice of lodging - or way of getting there - is great?

An informal straw poll among colleagues and friends reveals they think awards are over-rated and don’t significantly influence holiday choices.

But many in the travel industry - including those who bestow awards and those eligible to receive them - take an opposite view.

They argue awards are a wonderful way to identify providers of top-notch services.
