March 23, 2008

flying with childWe don’t all ways have the privilege of flying business class with toddler or baby, so before you leave home for the airport to board an aircraft with you baby for a long haul flight like a Sydney to London, or Melbourne to New York. Ensure you have placed a mark against the following tips to ensure you and your baby has a comfortable and enjoyable flight.

- Visit your GP, Be sure you have checked that you and your baby are covered for vaccinations for any overseas destinations you be visiting. The week before flying visit the GP for a quick check up to cover the throat, ears and general health. Ask you doctor for some advice on making a basic medical kit to travel with you.

- Be sure you have reserved a bassinet with your seat, this should be done at time of booking and followed up with the airline 1 week prior to travelling to ensure that the airline has all your details. Take a cheesecloth or sheet which can cover the bassinet from lights on aboard the aircraft, also some pegs and blue tac to hold the cloth in position.

- Creature comforts, pack some of your babies favourite soft toys, small blanket etc these items are great for comforting a baby and providing them with a familiar item from home.

- Small bag of toys, pack small toys and books which will keep the baby entertained. We have always taken a new toy and introduced it on the flight this is a great tip to keep them engaged with something that is new. Be sure to read your babies favourite books through out your flight.

- Pack and get comfortable, be sure yourself and your baby are wearing comfortable clothes; you don’t want to be dealing with fiddly little buttons and zippers in a small aircraft bathroom.

- What are we eating, pack food that’s suitable for flying and can be consumed without to much fuss. Ensure that you have notified the airline of your meal preferences for your baby.

- Finally check the essentials, Bottles, Nappies, rash cream, moisturisers and wipes for cleaning.

If you have covered these seven items, at least you will know you have prepared well for flying with your baby on your long haul.
