Australia's capital city, Canberra is a modern, vibrant, active city set in beautiful parkland, often undeservedly overlooked by families who head straight to Sydney, Melbourne or the Gold Coast. Just 3.5 hours drive or a short 45 minute flight from Sydney, Canberra's dry climate with four distinct seasons (cool in winter, warm-hot in Summer) is ideal for exploring the many family attractions this city has to offer with plenty of fun activities to keep children of all ages entertained.
Many of Canberra's top attractions are free, or have low admission prices, and the well-planned city layout means that you are often no more than 10 minutes away from wherever you want to go. There is a good bus system, but we recommend hiring a car to make the most of your visit.
Got the time and energy to venture further afield? Canberra is also a fantastic base to explore the wider region - the beautiful beaches of the South Coast, historic townships and the famous Snowy Mountains where you can ski in winter, walk or mountain bike in summer.
