Aloha!  With beautiful beaches, volcanoes and water sports galore, Hawaii just may be the perfect destination for a family holiday.  Made up of six major islands, each with their own distinct personality, there truly is something for every family in Hawaii, whether you're seeking adventure, relaxation or just non-stop fun.

The island of Oahu is home to the state capital and the majority of Hawaii's population.  Famous its world class surfing at Waikiki beach, it also has history at the memorials and museums of Pearl Harbour.

Most visitors to Oahu stay in Waikiki.  There is of course loads to do in both Waikiki and Honolulu, but make sure you also explore the rest of what this beautiful island has to offer.  To really make the most of your stay and the island, we recommend hiring a car.

Got the time and energy to venture further afield?  Take the time to explore one of the other islands of Hawaii, such as "The Big Island" or Maui.

Families Will Love

  • Beaches - with close to 100 beaches on Oahu alone, you are bound to find the perfect beach for your family.  Try surf lessons at the iconic Waikiki Beach, or snorkelling at Hanauma Bay
  • Hawaiian Culture - pay a visit to the Polynesian Cultural Centre on the North Shore of Oahu.  Many hotel resorts will also offer luau nights (Hawaiian feasts), and free-of-charge hula dancing or lei making workshops.  Paradise Cove Luau is also highly recommended, offering an array of activities for 2 hours before dinner - flower lei making, palm fronds weaving, temporary Hawaiian tattoos.
  • Pearl Harbour - give the kids (and maybe yourself!) a history lesson they'll never forget; learn about how and where World War II began and ended. For older children (school age +), a visit to the USS Arizona Memorial is a once in a lifetime educational experience.
  • The Dole Plantation's Pineapple Garden Maze - get lost in the world's largest maze according to the Guinness Book of World Records!  Search for 8 secret stations along your way to solving the mystery of the maze... Covering an area of more than 2 acres, this maze is made up of 14,000 colourful Hawaiian plants, including hibiscus and, of course, pineapple.
  • Atlantis Submarine tour from Waikiki - see what lies beneath the surf of Waikiki from a submarine.  Experience a spectacular underwater adventure with amazing coral formations, shipwrecks and even sunken airliners in a real submarine - "totally safe, and totally cool!"
  • Horseback riding at Kualoa Ranch and neighbouring Ka'a'awa Valley - situated in one of Oahu's most historic areas, it is also one of Oahu's most beautiful valley's and remains largely untouched by modern development.  Take a 2-hour horseback ride deep into the valley, and you may see some familiar landscape - scenes were filmed here for movies such as 50 First Dates, Godzilla, Lost, Mighty Joe Young and Pearl Harbour.  For those not keen on horses, there is also a fishpond, garden tours, snorkelling, canoeing or beach volley ball at a private beach.
