Sydney holidays with kids

Sydney is surely Australia's most family friendly city, not only due to its mild climate and family friendly beaches, but it's also packed with things to do that will keep kids of all ages entertained.

Built around an enormous natural harbour, families will love travelling from A to B via the famous Sydney ferries (an outing in itself), while a metro and bus system provides easy access to places beyond the harbour.  Dozens of beautiful beaches line both the coast and the harbour, many of which are patrolled.  Away from the beach, Mum will love the shopping, Dad the regular sporting events, and the kids anything from the wonderful Taronga Zoo, museums galore, Luna Park or even a climb to the top of the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge!

Family-friendly accommodation in Sydney is plentiful and will suit families of all budgets and tastes.

Got the time and energy to venture further afield?  Visit the spectacular Blue Mountains for a totally different alpine experience just a couple of hours from Sydney - kids will love the zig zag railway, while adults will be awed by the amazing views.

Families Will Love

  • Taronga Zoo - this world-famous zoo has fabulous views over Sydney Harbour and is a day out not to be missed.  Just 12 minutes from the city by ferry, Taronga Zoo has an amazing array of animals with free shows and keeper talks throughout the day.  For a truly unforgettable experience, stay the night! Taronga Zoo's "Roar & Snore" allows you to camp overnight in comfortable, permanent tents surrounded by the sounds of the animals and provides access to special behind-the-scenes activities.
  • Luna Park - A superbly restored 1930's theme park, Luna Park is built right on the harbour in Sydney's north.  Packed full of rides and activities to suit families of all ages, with mini-rides for the younger kids, white knuckle rides for the thrill seekers and the Coney Island giant wooden slides or ferris wheel for the nostalgic.
  • Sydney BridgeClimb - take the climb of your life all the way to the top of the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge!  With a variety of different climbs available at all times of the day (dawn, daytime, twilight or night), the view is always different and always spectacular.  Must be over 10 years old.
  • Museums - lots of wonderful museums catering to all different interests. Visit PowerHouse Museum for science and technology (check out their wonderful special exhibitions during school holidays too), see the inside of a real submarine at the National Maritime Museum, or be awed by the dinosaurs at the Australian Museum.
  • SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium - located in the heart of Sydney at Darling Harbour, discover one of the world's largest aquariums through 14 newly-themed zones from the thrilling walk-through ocean tunnel "Shark Valley" to the hands-on "Discovery Rockpool". Over 70 exhibits of 700 different species and 13,000 animals, the aquarium is home to one of the world's largest variety of sharks and sting-rays.
  • Beaches - With well over 100 beaches in the city, there is a beach for everyone!  Learn to surf at the iconic Manly or Bondi ocean beaches, grab a gelato, build some sand castles, play beach volley ball or just relax with a book while the kids splash around in the calm waters of the harbour beaches.
